2007: More Web Design Trends & Cliches

We discovered the other day that one of our latest website builds, The Cottonseed Oil Tour, which we did for the National Cottonseed Products Association, was picked up as an example for a recent web design article, “2007: More Web Design Trends & Cliches.” It was published by Modern Life, from the United Kingdom, which boasts as “a series of insights and research into the world of the web — presented in such a way as to be informative yet entertaining.” The article highlights 2007’s web design trends. What an honor to have been used as an example under “#5 - High Texture Designs.”

“I Can See” Video

I Can See video by Adam Sarmiento

One great thing about Oklahoma is that there is an overwhelming amount of talent here. I ran into Adam Sarmiento, the other day, and he told me to check out his site and what he’s been up to. After spending about an hour surfing on his site, I just had to post this truly amazing video. It’s called “I Can See” by the band I and I . The music and video was written, performed and edited by Adam Sarmiento. Credits also go to his wife, Amber for editing and direction. Adam and Amber are some of the most beautiful people I know and I feel blessed to call them close friends. Adam’s music has been running through my ears since 1995 when he was a drummer for The New Tribe with his brother, Eric Sarmiento. Both Eric and Adam are amazing musicians. Please check out their recording label, Alchemist Records and I And I’s website. You can watch all of I and I’s videos, here. Hook it up and spread the love!

Oklahoma Vortex

Cut & Paste

Well, well, well … it looks like the Oklahoma Vortex sucked us back in, AGAIN. Due to some personal family reasons, we had to move back to Oklahoma City. It’s bitter sweet — leaving Portland friends and clients but reconnecting with old friends and chasing new leads. Fortunately, there seems to be a lot going on with art walks, parades and great music. And there seems to be a big emphasis on biking everywhere, too. Which is great, because I can’t stand driving. So, I’m looking forward to living here for at least the next few years as my situation seems unchangeable. Hopefully, it will lead to some great art shows and more creative work. We shall see. For now, enjoy the tattooed knucks of a fellow Oklahomey.

Cut & Paste, 2nd Place!

Cut & Paste

Holy Moly! I can’t believe it, but I took 2nd Place at the Cut & Paste Design Tournament, in Portland, OR! I walked home with Adobe CS3 Premium and a free 13″ MacBook (awesome). I had an insanely good time. Before the show, we hung out in the “Green Room” with the judges and other contestants with plenty of free beer and food. I got to rub elbows with some majorly cool dudes and dudettes. I was super-impressed with the turn out of 700+ people! Visit the event website here and check out each contestant’s work in each round. Mad props to Tim May, the winner. Thanks to Jake Holloman for lending me batteries for my camera that stopped working 10 minutes before we went on stage. And insane pounds of thanks goes to William Elliot for lending me his camera — you rock dude! Check out my works, Round 1, Round 2 and Round 3. Keep in mind — no preassembled work or photographs, everything you see was done on stage and in 15 minutes.

Cut & Paste Final Round

Cut & Paste

WOW! So, in my previous post, I talked about how I had been selected to audition for the Cut & Paste Design Tournament, here in Portland, OR. Well, I was picked as one of the top 8 to proceed to the final round on Sept, 21st at the Wonder Ballroom. I was ecstatic to here the news and feel extremely fortunate to have been chosen out of 40 designers. The final round will be judged by some amazing people, like UNKL and Plazm Magazine. Visit cutandpaste.com to see specifics about the main event, the 8 designers chosen and the awesome panel of judges. Winner takes home a Cintique Monitor. Thanks to Julian at PDX PIPELINE for writing about my work and his support. And special thanks goes to Melissa Delzio, for making the Portland Cut & Paste happen. Don’t miss this event!

Cut & Paste Battle

Cut & Paste

I submitted my portfolio to Cut & Paste and was picked to audition for the first round to be a final participant in the Cut & Paste Design Competition, held here in Portland, OR. Last Friday, July 28th, I auditioned and submitted this as my design. (Keep in mind, the theme was “Childhood” and was done on site in 15 miutes). In the final round, “watch as eight designers go head to head, Wacom to Wacom. For the crown, they’ll have to spin an idea with their own style in three, 15-minute rounds as projectors stream their living designs across the venue.” WOW! Winner takes home a Cintique Monitor. WISH ME LUCK!

It’s good to be back…

There's No Bike!

Settling back in to Portland has been easy. We love our neighborhood, Sunnyside, and are having lots of fun interacting with and experiencing our new environments. Speaking of, this is an awesome piece of street art found off of SE Belmont and 33rd. As you will see, there’s a shadow, but there’s no bike! What an ingenious concept. Thanks to the artist, whomever you are, and to Julian Chadwick of the PDX Pipeline for the image.

Kanaly Design 2.0

Wow. It’s been too long since we’ve made an update. I say “we” because I couldn’t have done this without Tim Hill’s help with the CSS and layout. Joe Lepis at AMS helped with the PHP and I can’t thank them enough. I’m really excited to start featuring all of the latest work, so check back periodically as I will be posting a large body of work. Peace out, homeys.
